Harrisburg High School Alumni Association hosted the first alumni reunion Friday, October 10, 2008 during the senior high football homecoming game. Festivities began at noon with the homecoming parade was followed by pep rallies at the Poinsett County Courthouse and high school. Alumni were entertained with a presentation of the Harrisburg High School Evolution followed by a tour of the high school and other campus buildings.The HHS Alumni Association hosted a large tailgating dinner of hot dogs, chili, chips, dips and desserts. Over 300 alumni came through the tailgate area!
Homecoming ceremonies were followed by the National Anthem performed by Mrs. Elaine Nix, former HHS choir teacher and alumni class of 1966 and former HHS Madrigals Fonda Arnold Eaton ’79, Curtis Sanders ’79, Randy Sanders ’74, Tonya Dill Cole ’86, Shayna Cole ’05, Edie Leonard Whitman ’93, Wesley Hooper ’07, Sarah Loughary ’07, Heather Chance Kimble ’04, Justin Kimble ’91, Amanda Mills ’95, Carmen Skillern ’99, John Stricklin ’94, and Dirk Owens ’82.
Air Evac Lifeteam Air Ambulance flew in the game football. It was given to Mr. Buell Crider, 1939 Salutatorian, captain of the 1938 football team and Mr. Melvin Gillis, HHS Class of 1942 and member of the 1941-42 football team. Mr. Crider and Mr. Gillis performed the coin toss for the homecoming game between Harrisburg Hornets and Piggott Mohawks.
Air Evac Lifeteam also flew in the Hornet flag in memory of Mr. J.F. Winningham class of 1938. Mr. Winnningham was originally scheduled to toss the game coin. Accepting on behalf of the Winningham family was Leah Winningham McCrary ’90, Mr. Winninghams’s granddaughter. Mrs. Hazel Crider, 1939 Valedictorian and homecoming queen, was also recognized for attending the nights events.Harrisburg Hornets won the game 34-6 making the Hornest 6-0! Alumni were invited to the HHS Student Council homecoming dance which followed the game in the high school cafeteria.
